Hand-dyed sashiko thread benibana, small skein, 40m

Soft indigo-overdyed benibana thread made from cotton with a gentle fuzz, perfect for sashiko.

This sashiko thread is dyed using benibana (safflower), a traditional Japanese dye. Safflower yields only a very small amount of pigment from its petals, making it an exceptionally labor-intensive and precious natural dye. For centuries, it was reserved for high-end kimono and formal garments, producing refined hues that range from soft yellow to deep crimson with an elegant depth.

Safflower dyeing is a delicate and highly skilled process that requires repeated cycles of dyeing and rinsing to gradually build and fix the color. With continued use, the tone becomes softer and more settled, gaining richness over time while developing a refined, natural texture unique to the thread.

This special edition is overdyed with botanical dyes, resulting in a subtle luster and layered depth of color. Its quiet elegance and distinctive presence make it a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

Made from 100% cotton, this thread is ideal for sashiko stitching, hand sewing, visible mending, and decorative embroidery. Its earthy tone pairs especially well with indigo-dyed and unbleached fabrics, adding quiet depth and character to any project.
