Hand-dyed sashiko thread kakishibu, small skein, 40m

Soft indigo-overdyed kakishibu thread made from cotton with a gentle fuzz, perfect for sashiko.

This sashiko thread is dyed using kakishibu, a traditional Japanese dye made from fermented unripe persimmons. Rich in natural tannins, kakishibu has long been valued in Japan not only for textiles but also for its use in furniture, tableware, and architectural elements due to its insect-repelling, antibacterial, and water-resistant properties.

As the tannins oxidize and dry, they form a thin protective film on the surface of the thread, gradually hardening over time. With continued use, the thread develops a deeper, richer color and transforms in texture, acquiring a uniquely tactile feel.

This special edition thread is further overdyed with natural indigo, resulting in a one-of-a-kind finish with a slightly metallic luster — a subtle fusion of depth and contrast that gives each stitch character.

Made from 100% cotton, this thread is ideal for sashiko stitching, hand sewing, visible mending, and decorative embroidery. Its earthy tone pairs especially well with indigo-dyed and unbleached fabrics, adding quiet depth and character to any project.
