Located northwest of Kobe, Banshu Ono has been known as a town of metal craftsmanship since the Muromachi period, with a long history of traditional scissor making.
Based in Ono City, Takashika Haruo Scissors Workshop has continued this craft across four generations since the early Showa era. These Noriaki-made Japanese scissors (Wabasami) are among the finest traditional thread scissors, crafted using the rare tsuke-hagane (forge-welded steel) technique.
Japanese thread scissors come in several regional forms. In general, “Tsume” is commonly used in the Kanto region, “Nagaba” in Osaka, and “Kabura” in Kyoto.
Tsume (Claw Type)
Featuring a shorter blade than the Nagaba style, the Tsume offers excellent control and maneuverability, making it ideal for precise and detailed work.
Nagaha (Long Blade Type)
With a longer blade, the Nagaba easily catches thread and is well suited for delicate cutting tasks, including making small cuts into fabric.
Kabura (Wide-Rounded Type)
Recognizable by its thicker blade and wider head shape, the Kabura allows greater force to be applied with ease.
Each pair comes in a paulownia wood box, making it an excellent gift.
